Moments of Mommy Magic

Since we’ve most recently documented Mommy’s epic fails, I thought I’d post about a time she got it right.

When I was teeny tiny, I only liked to sleep ON Mommy or Daddy. (This isn’t really a post about sleep – I know, I know, I can hear you groaning!) I would fall asleep snug in my swaddle (Mommy? is a CHAMPION swaddler) and be peacefully dreaming *until* anyone dared to try to put me in my crib. Then? I would jerk awake and scream like they were trying to dip me in molten lava.

Mommy tried letting me sleep longer, putting me down right away, standing next to the crib for a moment, dim light, full light, no light, ceiling fan on, ceiling fan off, soft music playing… nothing worked.

This went on for over a month and Mommy despaired of ever getting a decent night’s rest – she was petrified of falling asleep with me on her chest so, while it definitely happened, it wasn’t what you’d call a deep and restful sleep. Mommy was wandering around having sleep-deprivation based hallucinations!

And then…

Mommy had a Moment of Magic. One night, while I was snuggling and getting in my last bedtime bottle, she put a heating pad in my crib. She took it out right before placing me on the nice, cozy, pre-warmed spot and voila!

She excitedly told Daddy of her triumph and his response was…underwhelming.

“If you’re such a parenting genius,” he asked, “why did it take you 7 weeks to figure this out?”

Whatever. She only half heard him – she was falling asleep.

And HE never thought of it at all!

We have since spread this tip far and wide; baby won’t sleep? Try pre-heating the crib! Mommy wants to know what tips you guys have had – what are your moments of parenting genius?

  2. That is an awesome idea. I'm sure it was a life saver!

  3. So smart. I wish I had met you earlier and could have tried this on Eliana! Would have saved much sleep psychosis.

  4. That's brilliant! I need to keep that in mind for the next one. And oh, what a sweet tiny little bundle.
