Where I’m From

A bonus second post today – aren’t you all lucky? Metta from 365 Days: 30+ Mommyhood is hosting a poetry blog hop and I thought I’d join in. Keep in mind, though, as you read my sad attempt at verse here that I’m not even a year old yet…

I am from picture books
from The Very Hungry Caterpillar and That’s Not My Snowman
I am from the cozy and cluttered condo
warm and messy and bright
I am from the deck railing flower box
The countertop herb garden
which Daddy keeps meaning to begin.

I’m from Passover seder singalongs and curly hair
from Adam and Sarah
I’m from over-thinking and happy dances
and from singing silly songs
I’m from Watch Out and You’re Okay
and Zip-Z-Dee-Do-Dah
I’m from bedtime baths

I’m from Nyack and Italy
carrot soup and two kinds of stuffing
From Daddy turning to the GPS the day I was born
while Mommy insisted we stop for iced coffee
Matted illustration postcards, hand-me-down Matthew Jr., hand-painted window shade, favorite blankie
all over my bedroom
Chosen and placed in each spot before I arrived

  1. Cole, this is a great poem for not even being a year old yet! And I love the picture of your room. I had no idea you were so in to the Very Hungry Caterpillar. My daughter loves that book too! Thanks so much for participating.

  2. I just have to say… this is amazing. I love the places you're from & how they're so similar yet different from the grown ups! I really love this version!

  3. I love your warm bright room, your house sounds just like ours! Great poem.
