Sometimes? You can keep your opinions to yourself.

As a citizen of the United States, I’m a BIG fan of the Freedom Speech – it is one of the ideals that our country was founded upon and Mommy has always been a proponent of the “I may not like what you have to say, but I’ll defend your right to say it.”

Turns out, though, there are limits.

Mommies, for some reason, feel free to judge each other all the time. Apparently some people’s confidence in their parenting decisions comes from ripping any other choices apart. The debates are endless: cloth vs. ‘sposies, breastmilk vs. formula, co-sleeping vs. CIO, babywearing vs. stroller, etc., etc. ETC.

Circumcision vs. Intactivist

For the most part, we try to play nice on the blogosphere and at least respect each other when we don’t agree, but there are those who tear each other down; after the recent Similac problems with beetles in the formula powder, scores of smug, holier-than-thou lactivists pronounced that no one could recall their breasts, which set off a score of hurt feelings on both sides. For the record, not every advocate of breastfeeding feels the need to make formula feeders feel bad about their decisions, but there are some who do.

That controversy does not even come close to the most recent Twitter uproar.

Jill and Shane lost their 7-week-old son, Joshua, on Wednesday. Joshua was born with cardiac problems that the doctors have ruled as his cause of death. Before he passed away, Joshua was circumcised with some complications.

One blogger took their story and re-posted it on her own site under the heading “Baby Dies from Circumcision Surgery Blood Loss and Heart Failure.”

Katy wrote a better recap of the internet tsunami that followed than I can, but it comes down to this:

There are those who took from and exploited one family’s personal tragedy to further their own agenda and that is not okay.

If you cannot say anything nice, keep your thoughts to yourself.

Regardless of which side you fall on in the circumcision/intactivist debate, this is a grieving family. Have some compassion.
