Mommy is allergic to cooking.

Seriously. It’s a good thing she has other skills.

In our house, daddy does 85% 99% of the cooking. Mommy is good for getting my bottles ready and *maybe* making me a piece of toast and peanut butter… Sometimes she might go so far as throwing some leftovers into the microwave – but anything beyond that, well, is beyond her.
She is not good at cooking and doesn’t like it. And that, usually is that – since Daddy IS a good cook and DOES like it.
But this semester is pretty busy for Daddy; he’s prepping two brand new curricula this year and has a different class schedule than he’s used to, he’s building union rep, he’s advisor for the school newspaper, he’s taking a graduate class one night a week an hour away – with all the work that goes into that, AND he’s teaching guitar lessons and a weekly guitar class. Some days I don’t even get to see him at all!
So Mommy had a *brilliant* idea for an anniversary present. Nicci over at Changing the Universe blogged about using Fix, Freeze, and Feast to prepare several meals ahead of time and sticking them in the freezer for later use. Mommy decided she would make a freezer full of meals for us to eat in the coming months as a surprise for Daddy.
First of all, she has NO idea how anyone else does this by themselves, but she had to call in reinforcements. Aunt Angela was called in to toddler-wrangle and offer on-scene advice (heading of the 27 phone calls Mommy would have had to make to her).
Our first fail was in the supermarket. Mommy made a list, but not separated into grocery store sections, so we wandered around for about an hour – hitting the produce section THREE times. I tried to tell her this was not how Daddy does it and told her “no, no” for most of the trip. The manager drummed in how often Mommy goes to that store; she remarked how she knows ME ’cause I always come in with Daddy.
We finally made it home (without one vital can of tomato paste so the “Basic Red Sauce” would have to wait) and set about preparing the chicken for our first recipe: Chicken Broccoli Bake. Mommy is not a fan of cleaning chicken – blech! Then she was ready to attack the FIRST step of the FIRST recipe – and immediately needed guidance. The book said to put the chicken pices in a large saucepan and saute them until fully cooked. Mommy had to ask Aunt Angela if she needed oil in the bottom of the pan, and what kind, and how much, and why don’t they print that in the book as part of the directions?!

After four hours of controlled chaos, and serious intervention from Aunt Angela, Mommy had baggies of Chicken Broccoli Bake, Cheesy Biscuits, Chicken Parmigiana (minus the red sauce), and Caesar Portobella marinade in the freezer. Daddy was so surprised! (Really. Mommmy NEVER cooks.)
Immediately upon completing this task, Mommy’s eye (which had been irritated all day), got red and puffy and watery. Yuck. It only got worse throughout the night – and Coach came over to play with me while Mommy went to bed (at 7:00) and Daddy was at class.
Mommy’s eye required a trip to the doctor today, will need a follow-up on Tuesday, and needs drops every 2 hours in between.
See when the next time Mommy sets foot in the kitchen is…

  8. I totally can't cook either. I peeled my first potato (to make Mason sweet potatoes) on Wednesday! I once wrecked a copper bottom pot burning water. And did you know that if you tilt a casserole pan vertically while taking it out of the oven, you will dump your casserole onto the oven door? I'm pretty sure poor Mason is going to starve to death when his dad has long work weeks.

Did they ever say what actually was wrong with your eye? Or if you could get shots for the cooking allergy? At least you ended up with some yummy freezer meals when it was all said and done!!

  9. this is hilarious! i give you props for trying the fix & freeze method. i have yet to attempt that. i'm more a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kinda girl.
