Current Events

I’ve been up super-early the last few days, so I’m Mommy’s too tuckered during the day to have any really fun adventures. Instead, we’re trying to catch up from last weekend and get ready for this weekend – I’m spending two whole days with Daddy!

Anyway, there are a few news stories that have caught my attention:

  1. Gisele Bundchen thinks there should be a “worldwide law” making breastfeeding mandatory for every infant up to 6 months. I think we’ve beaten this topic to death by now, but *I* think there should be a worldwide law requiring ignorant people to keep their opinions to themsleves.
  2. The Landmarks Preservation Commission denied landmark status to a building near Ground Zero that would have prevented the construction of an Islamic community center/mosque. The uproar over this makes me a bit sad. I know this is a controversial topic, but the U.S. was *founded* on the ideal of freedom of religion – they are *not* trying to build an Al Qaeda training school. News flash: not ALL Muslims were involved in September 11. Timothy McVeigh was Christian – is there a radius surrounding the Oklahoma City bombing site that there are no churches? This sort of thinking just seems racist to me, and reminds me of the mentality that led to Japanese internment camps during World War II.
  3. Last night’s What Would You Do? featured a segment about illegally parking in handicapped spaces. The overwhelming result was that people are (rightfully) angered by people who park in these spots without needing to. I have no disagreement with that at all, but it made me wonder about handicapped stalls in the bathroom. Honestly? Mommy and I use them – they’re bigger and 9 times out of 10 that’s where the changing station is anyway. Obviously, if there was someone in need of that stall waiting, we’d let them in first, but are they fair game for everyone to use? Or should they be left *only* for those who are truly disabled? What if there’s a line?

Any thoughts?

  1. you already know my thoughts on gisele…ground zero site…first of all I hate that term ground zero…but anyway i agree with ya. I'd like to think we as NYers (or Americans for that matter) are more openminded and tolerant than that.

  2. New to your blog, and after reading #1, I'm in love! New follower here!

  3. I think its okay to use the handicap stall. Now parking… my parnets have a handicap sticker on their car. And NO ONE is handicapped. We got it back in the late 90s because my grandmother was blind and we did need it when driving her places to park close to the entrances, shorter distance to walk. BUT she passed away inMarch of 2001 and the town keeps renewing the pass! I get mad when my parents park in the handicap spot.

  4. Gisele is a giant boob…excuse my language. And the handicapped stall is fair game…especially for Mom's with kids/strollers. That being said, yes, a handicapped/elderly person on line gets first dibs.

My first time at your blog…I came here from Mom 101.
