Aunt Debbie suggested that I might post my take on the most recent scandal to hit the preschool set: Katy Perry’s Outfit. Apparently, Sesame Street previewed some segments from its new season on YouTube and, because of the negative reaction to Katy’s cleavage, this one will never air.
So. My thoughts:
- Katy says at the beginning that she is dressed in dress-up clothes – her dress actually looks kind of like an ice skating costume to me; there is nude fabric all the way up to her neck. As such, it can’t be held to the same expectations we would have of regular everyday clothes. Also? She’s running around an animated street – this is clearly not modeled as an outfit to wear to the grocery store.
- Katy may have been confused about the Street‘s dress code: most of its inhabitants run around naked all the time! Sure, Abby Cadabby and Zoe wear dresses, but Rosita doesn’t – and Big Bird only wears a tie when he’s feeling really festive. Cookie Monster, Grover, and Oscar the Grouch almost never wear clothes. Let’s face it, Sesame Street is kind of a nudist colony. Perhaps, instead of criticizing her specific choice, we should just be glad Katy wore clothes at all!
- Yes, the dress is a bit low cut, but it doesn’t show anything more than you would see on an average trip to the beach. Honestly, if there hadn’t been so much fuss made over it, I know *I* wouldn’t even have noticed – and Mommy might not have either. This whole thing just seems like an overreaction to me.
Harmony and C and Mommy and I are planning a trip to the Bronx Zoo on Tuesday, October 5 – and YOU are invited! Really! You! We figure the more the merrier, so if you’re in the NY area, feel free to join us.
